From Orchard to Table: The Story Behind Every Kalaghar Tray

From Orchard to Table: The Story Behind Every Kalaghar Tray

Pick up any tray from our collection and you're holding the last chapter of a long story. It starts in a mango orchard, not a forest.

The wood with a second life

Mango trees are planted for their fruit, and after 15 to 20 years of harvests, they slow down and stop bearing well. Farmers then fell the old trees and replant young ones in their place. Instead of being burned or left to rot, that dense, beautifully grained wood gets a second life. That's the wood we use: a by-product of fruit farming, not fresh-cut timber.

It's also lovely to work with. Mango wood has a warm honey tone with fine grain that shows through every finish, which is why no two trays ever look quite the same.

Cut, turned, and sanded by hand

Each round tray and platter begins as a rough block of seasoned wood. Artisans shape it into its circle, then sand it through progressively finer grits until the surface feels almost like stone. This stage matters more than most people realise: a tray is something your fingers touch every day, and the difference between an average finish and a good one is hours of patient work.

The designs on top

Once shaped and sealed, each piece gets its surface print, whether that's a mandala, a tropical leaf, a lotus, or an abstract wave. The artwork is applied carefully so the grain of the wood stays visible underneath, keeping the design part of the material rather than sitting on top of it. A final coat of food-safe sealant protects the print from everyday use.

Why small differences are the point

Because these are handmade from natural wood, expect small variations in tone and grain from piece to piece. We think of that as a feature, not a flaw. Your tray isn't one of a production run of ten thousand identical items; it's the only one exactly like it.

That's the journey every Kalaghar tray takes: an orchard in India, a farmer replanting for the next season, an artisan's hands, and finally your table, ready for chai, snacks, and the people you share them with.
